smooth operators
A handful of fearless leaders from across the rail industry will be lined up to place their bodies on the beauty therapist’s table for Rail Aid.

Smooth Operators offers the chance of a lifetime for every single member of the railway family: the opportunity to send a senior member of the rail industry to the beauty therapist’s chair to undergo the hair-raising experience of getting their legs waxed. And even better, we all get to watch.
In support of Rail Aid, eight brave and sporting senior rail industry figures have volunteered for Smooth Operators which will see one of them get their hairy haunches publicly dripped and stripped. The unlucky winner will be decided by votes from across the rail industry and the whole painful process will be filmed for Rail Aid’s Appeal Show, which will be broadcast online on Friday 27th November. Voting couldn’t be simpler. A Rail Aid donation of £5 gets you a vote for the hirsute pins you want to see waxed smooth, and you can see who is currently raising the most money and therefore in pole position for lovely hairless pins.
To help you choose who you’d like to see getting the hot wax treatment, we’ve asked each of them for a quotation:
Andy Byford
Transport for London Commissioner
“I’m not exactly the most hirsute chap to begin with, let’s face it, so vote for me, finish the job off and support a great cause!”
Andrew Haines
Chief Executive Network Rail
“At my age I’m less hairier than I once was so it will be a less arduous task for whoever has to do it.”
John Halsall
MD Southern Region, Network Rail
“Railway Children is an amazing force for good. This stand-out charity helps thousands of children move from misery to happiness. Thank you for what you do.”
Sir Michael Holden
Former train operator and Network Rail executive
“I’m very happy to put my body on the line for a good cause!”
Alex Hynes
MD Scotland’s Rail
“I’m delighted to play a small part in Rail Aid. Smooth Operators is ideal for me because, frankly, I’d rather people see my legs than my dancing!”
David Statham
MD Southeastern
“I had wanted to do my bit for Railway Children this year by undertaking the Three Peaks by Rail for the third time. This challenge can’t be as painful. Can it?”
Alex Warner
Chair of the Grand Rail Collaboration
“I have to say, I’ve never had waxing of any description and I’ve a mix of curiosity, masochistic excitement and absolute terror, but if you do have to vote for me, then I promise not to squeal.”
Mick Whelan
General Secretary, Trade Union ASLEF
“I’ve never been one to take myself too seriously, and if I can help to support Railway Children I’m ready to endure a bit of pain! It’s inspiring to see the railway come together for this good cause.”
Christian Wolmar
Writer, broadcaster and rail columnist
“I have excellent legs, I was once told, and am very keen to see what they look like without hair. Though maybe not that keen….”
Smooth Operators voting closes Friday 13th November.
Don’t let your preferred candidate get away pain-free!
